Ceramic Art Exhibit at Cuesta College
SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Cuesta College Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery on the San Luis Obispo campus hosts Amanda Gentry’s contemporary ceramic exhibit Murmuration from Mar 5 through Apr 3.
The inaugural exhibition by Chicago-based sculptor Amanda Gentry features an interactive installation of 12 individually hand-built ceramic pods. Each unit is made from terra cotta and reclaimed crushed brick from the artist’s Chicago neighborhood, sanded down and gilded on the interior with 23-karat gold leaf. Through an opening at the base of each pod, Gentry invites visitors to lay down and rest their heads inside and experience their voices with wonder. To an outside witness, it sounds like a murmur.
“The sound of one’s own voice is rarely heard in isolation,” said Gentry. “While people talk to themselves from time to time, they are rarely listening with a reverent ear. Murmuration exists as a call to reconnect with the self on a deeper level. To give the inner voice the sacred space it deserves, and the isolated attention required to feed the spiritual that resides in all of us.”
Gentry describes her work as the result of dedication to form, material, and process, driven by a determination to reveal what is essential at the exclusion of the non-essential. She is a DCASE and IACA grant recipient who exhibits her work nationwide. Gentry received a BFA in Design with a minor in Sculpture from Boston University.
Murmuration opens on Mar 5 with a reception from 4:30 - 7:30 p.m and an Artist Talk at 5:30 p.m. in the Experimental Theater at the Harold J. Miossi Cultural and Performing Arts Center. A sneak peek with the artist is also scheduled at noon in the gallery. On Mar 26, there will be a special performance by the SLO Movement Art Center in the gallery at 5:30 and 6:00 p.m. and talkback at 6:30 p.m.
The Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery is in Room 7170 on Cuesta College’s San Luis Obispo campus. Visit the gallery webpage or call (805) 546-3202 for a full schedule of exhibits and hours of operation.
