Faculty Lecture on Sexual Identity
In an effort to share Cuesta College faculty expertise with fellow faculty, staff and the community, the college will hold a Faculty Lecture Series event on April 10 titled “Sexual Identities: From Center to Margins” from 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. on the San Luis Obispo Campus in room 4028.
Cuesta College Human Development Instructor Bailey Drechsler will lead the lecture and discuss “the distinct components of sexual identity, along with the limitations of the Western narrative which frame it.”
“In acknowledging androgyny, asexuality, and transgenderism, we see that the prevailing Western view of sexual identity is not only overly simplified, but also discriminatory,” said Drechsler, who also serves on the college’s Equity Action Committee. “Moving beyond a binary perspective of gender, this presentation addresses gender fluidity expressed in Japan, Samoa, and in indigenous and contemporary Americas.”
The lecture is free to the public, however space is limited. Members of the public interested in attending the lecture are encouraged to call ahead at (805) 546-3100, ext. 2659, or email lbaxley@cuesta.edu.
The college launched the Faculty Lecture Series in February of 2016 with the goal of hosting three lectures each semester. According to Cuesta College Academic Senate president and chemistry instructor Dr. Lara Baxley, “the intent of the Faculty Lecture Series is to share the vast and interesting knowledge of various faculty members, while providing a sense of community, and allowing the opportunity for faculty, staff, students and the public to come and learn about Cuesta College’s many disciplines.”
Since September 2016, the following lectures have taken place and are viewable on the college’s You Tube page:
