Grapplers Land Three on All-SEC Teams

Garcia Named SEC Wrestler of the Year

SAN LUIS OBISPO (December 15, 2015)- Cuesta Wrestling enjoyed another outstanding season with an 8th place team finish at the 2016 CCCAA State Wrestling Championships.  The Cougars finished in 3rd place in SouthEast Conference and three grapplers earned all-SEC honors, including 2016 SEC Wrestler of the Year Alex Garcia (Salinas).  Garcia, who also won a CCCAA State Title, is the seventh Cuesta wrestler to be named SEC Wrestler of the Year.   

Notes: Below is breakdown of the Cougars’ all-conference selections and state qualifiers.

125- Freshman Jace Heryford (Sutter HS) finished in 2nd place at the 2016 SouthEast Conference Championship with a 2-1 record.  He ended the season with a 14-12 record and did not advance to the 2016 CCCAA Regional Tournament. 

133- Sophomore Ross Arve (Clovis) finished in 3rd place at the 2016 SouthEast Conference Championship with a 1-1 record and earned all-SEC Honorable Mention.  He qualified for his second CCCAA Regional Tournament, however his 8th place finish kept him out of the 2016 CCCAA State Meet.  Arve was 6-8 on the year and 16-21 over his two-year Cuesta career. Freshman Leif Dominguez (Gilroy HS) did not earn any SEC honors, but was a 2016 CCCAA State Place Winner.  Dominguez was 3-2 at the CCCAA State Meet and claimed 7th place.  He ended his season with a 13-11 record.    

 

174- 2016 All-SEC First Teamer Alex Garcia (Salinas) was also named 2016 SEC Wrestler of the Year. Garcia’s only loss of the year to a CCCAA Wrestler was on the first weekend of the season.  He swept through the competition at the SEC Tournament, CCCAA Regional and, CCCAA State Championship to become Cuesta’s eighth individual CCCAA State Champion.  Garcia ended the season with a 32-2 overall record.

184- Freshman Isaac De La Cruz (Santa Maria: Righetti HS) did not earn any SEC honors, but was a 2016 CCCAA State Place Winner.  He claimed 7th Place at the CCCAA State Meet with a 3-2 record at the meet.  He ended his freshman season with 16-19 mark, over three divisions, for the year.
