Cuesta Women’s Polo Lands 7 on WSC Teams
SAN LUIS OBISPO (December 13, 2016)- Women’s water polo tied a school record with 24 victories and finished 4th in the Western State Conference with a 24-10 overall record. Despite missing the post-season by the narrowest of margins, the team was well represented on the all state and conference teams. Seven Cuesta players earned All Western State Conference honors, led by All State selection Daci Hughes (Bountiful, UT).
Sophomore Daci Hughes (Bountiful), one of two returning starters on the team, anchored the Cougars on both offense and defense this year. Hughes was named to the 2016 All Western State Conference First Team and the CCCAA All-State Second Team. She was the team’s top interior defender and swiped a team-high 65 steals. On offense, she set new school records for season and career shooting percentage, while leading the team with 79 goals and moving up to #10 all time at Cuesta with 119 career goals.
Freshman Mia Viss (Modesto) joined Hughes on the 2016 All-WSC First Team. Viss was one of three goalies on the Cuesta roster and shared duties as part of one the deepest and most talented goaltending corps in program history. She ended up getting the call in the Cougars’ must win games and posted a 15-8 record with a 5.52 goals per game average on the season. Her 232 saves and 60.9 save percentage on the season both represent the 4th best marks all time by a Cuesta goaltender. Viss also tied a school record with eight games of, at least, a dozen saves.
Freshmen Victoria White (Los Osos: Morro Bay HS) and Adelaide Foster (SLO HS) were both named to the 2016 All Western State Conference Second Team. White was the Cougars’ top playmaker. She scored 37 goals on her own; while her team-high 47 assists represent the second highest total at Cuesta. Foster added 42 goals and drew a team-high 52 exclusion fouls; which is the second best total all time at Cuesta.
2015 All-WSC Second Teamer Katie White (Los Osos: Morro Bay HS) joined Freshmen Naomi Wilson (Morro Bay HS) and Shaine Sorensen (Solana Beach) as 2016 All-WSC Honorable Mention selections. White was second on the team with both 54 goals and 58 steals. She ranks 11th all time at Cuesta with 113 tallies and her 132 career steals rank 9th all time. Wilson scored 29 goals on the season, while her 37 assists represented the second highest total on the team and 9th best in Cuesta history. Sorensen added a balanced 29 goals, 22 assists and, 25 steals to the Cougars’ efforts.
