Volleyball Lands Four Players on All-Conference Teams
SAN LUIS OBISPO (December 14, 2016)— Women’s Volleyball bounced back into playoff contention with a 3rd place finish in the Western State Conference and a 12-10 overall record. The Cougars missed the playoffs, but shook off back-to-back 6th place finishes to pick up their seventh “bronze” finish in the conference over the past nine years. Cuesta’s overall play was recognized by the Western State Conference and four players earned all-WSC recognition; including first team selection Maren Cracknell (Atascadero HS).
2016 All-WSC First Teamer Maren Cracknell (Atascadero HS) earned all-WSC Honorable Mention honors as a middle blocker in 2015, but moved to the outside and onto the first team this year. She raised her team-leading kill total to 146 with 14 in her last two games and her late flurry allowed her to reach 300-kill mark for her career. Cracknell concluded her Cuesta career with exactly 300 kills and ranks 15th all time at Cuesta. She was also second on the team with 81 total blocks, which ranks 9th all time at Cuesta. Her 155-career blocks rank #4 all time.
Freshman Libero Becky Boersma (Othello HS, WA) was named to the 2016 All-WSC Second Team. Boersma was a great all around player for the Cougars, but she spent most of her time in the backrow. She led the Cougars with 254 digs on defense and added 26 service aces to the offense.
Sophomore Hallie Robertson (Folsom) and Freshman Kaylie Griffin (Atascadero HS) were both accorded 2016 All-WSC Honorable Mention. Robertson was one of the most improved players from the 2015 campaign. She played through all the rotations this season and her statistics demonstrate her strong overall game. Her 142 kills were four behind Cracknell for the team lead and she was second on the team in aces with 36; which is 7th all time. On defense she added 27 total blocks and was second on the team with 223 digs. Griffin was a game changer for the Cougars. She led the team with 86 total blocks, 7th all time, and her presence at the net forced opponents into mistakes. She also added 99 kills with a team-best .292 hitting percentage
