EMT Basic and EMT Refresher

EMT Basic (EMS 201)

This 8.5 unit, 18 week (1 semester) course presents the techniques of emergency medical care presently considered within the responsibilities of the Emergency Medical Technician I.  Students are taught the fundamental principles and skills required to provide emergency medical care for patients at the scene of an accident or the onset of sudden illness and during transport to a medical facility.

This course includes theory & laboratory practice of selected skills, with a minimum of 10 hours of clinical observation with an advanced life support unit and/or in a hospital emergency room, and 18 hours of lab time to be announced.  Classes are offered on the San Luis Obispo and North County (Paso Robles) campuses, during the fall and spring semesters.

No application is required to take the EMS 201 course. Students can register for this course on their assigned registration date after applying to the college.

EMS 201 Prerequites:

Age Requirement: Students must be 18 years of age by the first class meeting.

CPR certification requirement: Students must bring a current CPR card for Healthcare Providers or Professional Rescuers  to the first class meeting or they will not be eligible to remain in the class and their seat will be given to an eligible student on the waiting list.  ONLINE CPR CLASSES WITHOUT A HANDS-ON COMPONENT, AND ANY CPR TRAINING CERTIFICATE TYPES OTHER THAN THOSE LISTED AT LINK ABOVE  ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE.

Background Check and Drug Screening: A Background Check and Drug Screening will be required prior to clinical access. Students who fail to pass either of these, or those who fail to complete them by the given deadline will be dropped from the course.

EMS 201 Schedule

EMS 201 students attend lectures, complete skills lab practice, and participate in clinical externship hours.  Refer to the class schedule for meeting times and mandatory skills date(s).
