Leadership Qualities

The Superintendent/President of Cuesta College must be a leader with the demonstrated ability to:

  • Exhibits personal/professional ethics and integrity in all behavior and relationships; brings a strong sense of fairness and equity to all decision making; is transparent as a decision maker; expects accountability of self and others; responds to situations in a timely manner and delegates effectively.

  • Work characteristics and management style inspires trust and confidence in one’s leadership; displays a strong work ethic, a deep commitment to the College and community; employs effective time management and up-to-date management tools and practices.

  • Is a transformational leader; possesses the technical and emotional intelligence to do the job; has achieved academic credentials appropriate for the position; attends to one’s own on-going professional relationships and leadership development; places high value on the professional development of all constituent groups.

  • Leads with a focus on continuous improvement of institutional effectiveness, grounded in: clear vision, effective planning and budget prioritizing, on-going assessment and improvement of student learning and other institutional outcomes, motivating people to perform at their best, and managing change effectively.

  • A positive attitude and enthusiasm for the work of the institution is an example to others; is an effective team builder; exhibits ability to motivate members of all constituent groups to perform at their highest level.

  • Participate in activities and maintain partnerships that strengthen the College’s image and community relationships  by demonstrating business acumen in planning, budgeting, assessment, and managing change; effectively manages internal and external resources (fiscal, physical, human); seeks alternate forms of income and other resources, particularly in challenging budgetary environments.
  • Apply a knowledge of the California Educational Code, Title V, collective bargaining rules and processes, legal, regulatory and accreditation standards (internal, state & federal) and has relevant institutional management experience in navigating such issues.
  • Exhibits a collaborative leadership style with all constituent groups; brings critical information to the dialogue; respects and values the contribution of such groups and individuals; is inclusive in decision making processes; uses collaboration effectively in accomplishing institutional objectives; is as good a team player as a team leader; understands the philosophy and practices that are the foundations of AB1725.

  • Encourage, recognize innovation in student learning and student support programs, and promote student success at every level.  Is a systems thinker; understands how instruction, student services, academic support services, business and administrative services, student life and leadership, technology services interface to effectively support student learning and other institutional processes.

  • Views diversity in all its forms as a campus value; focuses on meeting needs of underserved student and community populations; seeks diversity in employee positions.

  • Maintain fiscal stability while generating external funding through partnerships, grants, and the College Foundation.
  • Effectively collaborate and adhere to the participatory governance process with various campus constituencies, the Board of Trustees, and the Foundation Board.
  • Gauges political situations effectively; good judge of people, their motivations and behavior; exhibits patience, flexibility; tolerates ambiguity when necessary.

  • Has effective oral communication and listening skills, suitable for interpersonal and both small and large groups settings; is a visible and accessible leader; has executive presence and composure but is approachable; uses humor appropriately.
